The GENBAND S3 Session Border Controller was designed to fit in a myriad of networking architectures and offers a wide range of features in a variety of network configurations ranging from carrier-to-carrier interconnect, carrier-to-enterprise access, and carrier-to-consumer access for both fixed and mobile networks.
Robust Security: The S3 Session Border Control protects service provider and enterprise networks by providing multilayered security against a wide variety of threats meant to disrupt or disable IP networks such as flood attacks, DoS/DDoS attacks, and SIP signaling attacks. The S3 includes measures such as protocol validation, user authentication and authorization, encryption, private-to-public IP network address translation, topology hiding and separation of signaling and media interfaces to provide protection against network attacks, service thefts, and ensure communication privacy.
Seamless Any-to-Any Interconnectivity: The S3 Session Border Controller simplifies the network edge, providing a wide range of flexible policies to seamlessly interoperate with multivendor and multiprotocol VoIP equipment. Normalization includes ANI/DNIS, network address, SIP/H.323 protocol, transport layers including UDP/TCP/SCTP, DTMF, and codec interworking for smooth interworking between interconnect and access networks. Compatibility across firewalls, application servers, proxies, endpoints, media gateways and softswitches is ensured with a large community of interoperability partners.
Advanced Routing: The feature set in the S3 Session Border Controller provides intelligent routing at interconnect borders, including adaptive, least-cost and percent-based routing as well as dynamic route hunting. It enables state-of-the-art dynamic routing of traffic between interconnect peers based on call completion rates, route profit and route availability. Sophisticated routing intelligence reduces IP-to-IP session routing complexity, and policy enforcement enables advanced traffic engineering at the session layer for managed service assurance and SLA compliance.
Policy Enforcement and SLA Management: The S3 provides a comprehensive SLA management solution with multistaged policies to admit, inspect and shape traffic. It manages network access using real-time and aggregated admission control policies, prevents service theft by authenticating users, inspecting media address and codec, and shapes traffic per Quality of Service (QoS) marking. Visibility is provided into each IP session by generating real-time session detail records with over 100 fields.
Architecture Flexibility: With its high-transaction, advanced computing architecture, the S3 Session Border Controller supports multiple options for handling media and signaling traffic. The integrated option provides centralized security and control of both media and signaling, whereas the decoupled option enables an efficient network for handling high volumes of signaling traffic in the S3 and media traffic in border gateways. With separate media and control planes for efficient decoupled networks, the S3 supports 3GPP™, IMS/LTE, NGN, MSF, and PacketCable™ networks.
Operational Excellence: Complementing the GENBAND S3, the GENBAND GENView Real-time Session Manager (RSM) offers a real-time view of session performance and enables fine-grained communications between services running on the edge of the network and QoS assurance technologies, such as MPLS, running in the core of the network. Using the analytics it derives from session detail records, the GENBAND RSM can update the policies used to control the sessions. This dynamic update of policies, whether they are routing updates or bandwidth and QoS policy updates, ensures the services are carried out as intended. The feedback system in the RSM provides operators with highly predictive, scalable service architecture for session-based applications and SLA assurance.
